The Cacique Awards were initiated by Judy Stone in 1979 and were first produced by the NDATT in 1989.

In April 1996 the Executive Committee of the National Drama Association (NDATT) appointed a sub-committee to reassess the procedure that was being used for bestowing Cacique Awards.

On 20 July 1996, the Cacique Awards Committee mounted a symposium at which they presented draft proposals for a new Cacique Awards Procedure. As a result of this symposium, amendments were made and the final version was presented and passed at the Extraordinary General Meeting held on 13 October 1996.

Between July and November 1996, the Cacique Awards Committee continued to meet and work on examining the criteria for nominating and voting in each award category i.e. Most Outstanding Actor, Most Outstanding Set Design etc.

Symposiums continue to be held annually to seek the opinions of the membership in further refining the awards system. Several recommendations have made and have either been implemented or are in the process of being considered.

The Cacique Awards Committee is open to all members of NDATT who are willing to give of their time and skills.
